This traditional South African dish is similar to a meat loaf. But made with ground beef and spices for warm up the dish and sweetened with apricot jam and raisins. Topped with egg and milk and bay leaves to taste. So delicious and normally served with yellow turmeric rice as a side dish.
What meat goes with yellow rice?
Yellow rice is made with turmeric spices which make it yellow. It normally can go with any meats or vegetables. Beef, chicken, turkey, pork, fish or seafood.
Can you freeze bobotie dish?
Yes the dish can be frozen and made ahead. In sealed container or wrapped well, this dish will last for up to at least 3 months. Bring it back to room temperature and warm up in the oven, for about 15 – 20 minutes on 180 Deg. C.
It also keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days stored in a sealed container. Very useful to use left overs for fillings with crepes, pancakes, or wraps and vetkoek.

How To
After sauté the ingredients then you would fill a casserole dish with the curry minced meat. Then top it with the egg and milk mixture, topped with bay leaf. (follow the recipe attached for the exact instructions on how to put this dish together)
Bake in an oven for at least an hour.
While the casserole is baking you cook the yellow rice that is only made with some turmeric to yellow it.

Ingredients
- 450 g (1 pound) minced beef
- 1 small onion
- 1 tsp of tumeric
- 1 dessert spoon of curry powder
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 thick slice of bread
- 1 tablespoon of vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of apricot jam
- 1 teaspoon of chutney
- 2 –3 tablespoons of water
- 1 dessert spoon of raisons
TOPPING
- 1 egg
- salt and pepper
- 1/2 cup of milk (125 ml)
- Bay leaf
Instructions
- Heat up some olive oil and sauté the chopped onions.
- Soak the bread in the water.
- Soak raison in the vinegar.
- Stir in jam spices and seasonings and chutney, simmer for a few minutes.
- Add the meat and stir and flatten until all has been minced in well and loose.
- Then add the squeezed out bread and the raisons to the pan mixture. Keep stirring.
- Cook until the meat has been browned.
- Turn all of this into a greased casserole dish.
- Beat together the egg and milk mixture with seasoning and pour over the meat mixture in the casserole dish.
- Place the bay leaf on the top, then bake.
- Bake for 1 Hour on 180 Deg.C (350 Deg.F)
- In the mean time cook your rice but add some turmeric in it to make it yellow.
- The casserole should be brown and baked.
- Serve with rice and salad and a portion of bobotie.
