What happens when you add condensed milk to cake mix?
The consistency of the condensed milk in a can will make any cake or dessert taste more decadent. It also adds a richer and creamier texture and tenderness to the cake or dessert. Condensed milk is evaporated milk with sugar so it is very sweet. This will replace the sugar and egg needed for the mixture of a recipe. Added to box cake mixtures will help for the favor and textures.
Can I use condensed milk as an egg substitute in cake?
You can substitute a 1/4 cup of condensed milk for an egg in your baking recipes. This will help bind the ingredients and provide structure to your recipe. It also great for curds and cookies.

Ingredients
- pitted chopped dates.
- raisins, (or 375 g. of mixed fruit cake mix only)
- sultanas
- currents
- butter
- salt
- water
- condensed milk
- all purpose flour
- bi carb of soda
- apricot jam or marmalade (used orange marmalade.)
Get the amounts of the ingredients and the instructions with the recipe attached.
How To
On the stove top in a large pot, add your raisins, currents, sultanas, dates, butter, condensed milk and water. Bring to a boil then let it simmer, stirring now and again to prevent it from sticking. Let it simmer for 4 – 5 minutes.
Take of the stove and leave to cool, You can put the mixture into a large bowl to cool quicker, before adding flour mixture.
Sieve the flour and salt and bi carb of soda in a bowl. Spoon into the cooled fruit mix and mix it thoroughly.
Pour into the greased lined baking pans of choice, cover cake with brown paper to prevent burning on top. Remove the brown paper half way. Bake in the oven until cooked and tested done.
Check the cake before time is up to see if your oven cooks it quicker than the recipe. As all ovens differ.
When cool you can serve slices, or to keep the cake for 3 days or so wrapped in wax proof paper and or foil. Keeps well and the taste is better. No need for alcohol to preserve this cake.
Just the way I like it. Dates make the cake nice and sweet and little darker.

Ingredients
- 225 grams (8 oz) of pitted chopped dates.
- 125 grams of raisins, (or 375 g. of mixed fruit cake mix only)
- 125 grams of sultanas
- 125 grams of currents
- 1 1/4 cups (275 g) of butter
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 275 ml of water
- 1 tin of condensed milk (395 g)
- 1 3/4 cups + 2 tablespoons (300g )of all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of bi carb of soda
- 1 tablespoon of apricot jam or marmalade (orange marmalade)
Instructions
- Grease the cake tin to use for the cake, about (22cm or 9 in) If possible line with double parchment or wax proof paper. (to prevent burning when baking)
- On the stove top in a large pot, add your raisins, currents, sultanas, dates, butter, condensed milk and water. Bring to a boil stirring now and again to prevent it from sticking. Let it simmer for 4 – 5 minutes.
- Take of the stove and leave to cool, You can put the mixture into a large bowl to cool quicker, before adding flour mixture.
- Preheat the oven to 170Deg. C (338 Deg. F)
- While you wait for the mixture to cool. Sieve the flour and bi carb of soda and the salt in a bowl.
- In a the large bowl with the cooled fruit mix, fold in the flour mixture and apricot jam or(orange marmalade) until totally all mixed up.
- Spoon this mixture into the greased and double lined baking pans of choice. Cover with brown paper on top to prevent burning. Take of the brown paper half way so the top can cook.
- Bake in the oven of 170 Deg. C for one hour and ten minutes. (1 hr 10 min)(all ovens differ so check the cake near the end to see if it has baked and adjust the time for you bake)
- Check if the cake is cooked by inserting a clean knife or skewer in the middle. The cake should also be springy when touched.
- Leave to cool on a cooler rack.
Notes
- To keep the fruit cake wrap it in wax proof paper or parchment paper, leave for 2 – 3 days.
- Or cut when cool enough to serve, if you can not wait to eat this delicious cake
- all ovens are different so check cake near the end of the bake to see if it is already baked. It is the long time to bake.
