Ingredients

Scale

1. Couple of sweet potatoes

2. Water or baby formula

Instructions

  1. Peel the sweet potato, and chop it into cubes. The size of the cubes does not matter since it will all be pureed together in the end.
  2. Steam the potato cubes. Put the cubes into the microwave-safe bowl, add enough water to half-way cover the cubes, cover with plastic wrap, poke a hole in the wrap, and microwave until very soft (6-8 minutes).
  3. Puree the food. Once the sweet potato is cooked, add the cubes to the food processor and puree—Reserve the cooking liquid to use to thin the puree later, if necessary.
  4. Check the consistency. When babies first start eating solids, their food should be quite runny. Look at a jar of store-bought Stage 1 food to compare the consistencies.
  5. Add liquid. Add breast milk, formula, or water to the puree to thin it. This is a great way to use the reserved cooking liquid and to replace some of the potato’s nutrients that may have been released in the cooking process.

Storing and serving baby food.

  1. Ice cube trays are an excellent way to store homemade baby food. Each cube is approximately one ounce. Spoon the pureed food into the trays, cover tightly with plastic wrap or a lid, and freeze. It is a good idea to write the name of the food and the date on the tray. When it is time to serve the food, remove the trays from the freezer. Put a couple of cubes into a bowl and microwave for 15-20 seconds. Always check the temperature of the food for hot spots before it is served to the baby. Enjoy!
