An oven baked mini sweet and spicy cocktail meatball recipe idea to create for appetizers. Or a meal with side dishes. Delicious tasty honey and barbecue sauce to dip the beef meatballs in for finger foods at parties, or get togethers. Small enough for just one bite. On a toothpick or small kebob stick for a no mess snack or treat for special occasions.
Is it better to bake or fry meatballs before putting in sauce?
For time management of baking these cocktail meatballs, its quicker to oven bake them. You can bake a larger quantity at a time. They will brown and be crispy once cooked. Then you can coat the sauce on them and serve with toothpicks or kebob sticks. Frying is also a way to cook them. They will caramelize nicely but you can only fry a few at a time. With frying they will have to be attended to more often than baking in the oven and you can have them breaking up.
How long to brown meatballs before putting in sauce?
This recipe is for oven baked cocktail meatballs which are baked for 12 minutes and turned once. Once they are brown and crispy you can place them in a bowl and add the sauce. Tossing gently until all the meatballs are covered with the sauce. If you frying them it should take maybe 6 minutes. Once you remove them from the oil you can also toss them gently with the sauce while they are hot.
What is the secret to firm meatballs?
All meatballs should have an egg and breadcrumbs in the mixture. As this will bind the ground beef or meats and all the other ingredients together. Adding some parmesan cheese gives them that extra flavor and holds them together.
Ingredients
- ground beef (preferably)
- egg
- breadcrumbs
- chopped onion
- minced garlic
- freshly chopped parsley
- salt
- prepared honey Barbecue sauce (as per recipe)

How To
Prepare the baking sheets or pans with spray or cook or grease with butter. Line if you prefer with parchment paper for a non stick situation once baked. Set the oven to the recommended temperature to preheat. Once you are ready to bake these mini cocktail beef meatballs.
Using a microwave for the heating of the honey and barbecue sauce with sriracha. This will be stirred and a microwavable bowl must be used. set this aside.
Chop the onion finely and mince the garlic cloves. Get the other ingredients (see recipe for them)ready in a large bowl. Add the beef minced or ground meat with the spices and mix it up well. Finally adding your barbecue sauce mixture and mixing this all in well with your hands.
Using a table spoon to scoop out beef mince mixture, to make them equal sizes. Roll this in your hand for a small cocktail size meatball. Set them on the parchment paper on the baking sheets.
Bake them in the heated oven, for 12 minutes. Turn them around half way so they brown evenly on both sides.
Once they are cooked and golden brown then remove them and toss them in a large bowl with the sauce.
Serve them on a platter with fresh parsley with toothpicks in or on the side.

Ingredients
- 1 pounds of ground beef (preferably)
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/3 cup chopped onion
- 1 clove of minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon of freshly chopped parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of prepared honey BBQ sauce
For the sauce:
- 1 cup of BBQ sauce
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 tablespoon of Sriracha sauce
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Cover a baking tray with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent the meatballs from sticking.
- To make the sauce, mix the BBQ sauce, honey, and Sriracha sauce in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until well combined. Set aside. (To cook the sauce in a pot on the stove top. Start on medium heat and bring it to simmer, then turn the heat down and stir and leave for a minute or two minutes. You sauce should be done once all the ingredients are incorporated.)
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, parsley, salt, and prepared honey BBQ sauce. Mix well with your hands until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
- Form small meatballs with the meat mixture and place them on the prepared baking tray.
- Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for approximately 12 minutes. At the 6-minute mark, flip them over to ensure they brown evenly on all sides.
- Once the meatballs are cooked and golden brown, remove them from the oven and transfer them to a large bowl. Pour the Barbecue Honey Sriracha sauce over the meatballs and gently toss to coat them evenly with the sauce.
- Serve the meatballs on individual plates or on a large platter for sharing, and enjoy them as an appetizer alongside your favorite accompaniments.
