Sweet Potato Marshmallow Casserole
Bake this easy sweet potato dish for a family meal or for special occasions. Using orange sweet potatoes with pecans, added cinnamon with maple syrup. Topped with mini small marshmallow for a lunch or dinner meal. Oven Baked casserole and No bake stove top cooking of the sweet potatoes. No canned yams used. But you may use those as an alternative if you need to.
Why do Americans put marshmallows on sweet potato casserole?
It is said that a marshmallow company was trying to push the sale of their marshmallows and made this dish. So it is not a recipe from anybody’s grandmother. Although yams or sweet potatoes are sweet enough you do not have to add the marshmallows to sweeten them up.
Do you peel sweet potatoes before boiling for casserole?
It is not necessary to peel the sweet potatoes before boiling. But if you are going to mash them it would be easier to peel them first. Cooking sweet potatoes with their skins on will add extra flavors and be a healthier potato for a side dish. Roasted or cooked in foil over coals.
What is the difference between a sweet potato and a yam?
There is a difference between yams and sweet potatoes. They do not have the same appearance and differ in flavor and looks. Sweet potatoes are sweet and yams are not as well as yams being more starchier and seem to be drier. Yams texture and flavor are more similar to yuca or potatoes. Therefor sweet potatoes are a delicious potato of their own. You also get the different types of sweet potatoes, such as red or orange ones.
Ingredients
- orange sweet potatoes. (or yams)
- brown sugar
- maple syrup or honey
- unsalted butter, softened or melted
- salt
- ground cinnamon
- nutmeg
- vanilla extract
- chopped pecans
- mini marshmallows
Get the amounts needed for the ingredients as well as the detailed instructions in the recipe attached.
How To
Get your casserole dish greased or sprayed with spray and cook, or similar. Preheat oven for the casserole bake.
Peel and cook the peeled sweet potatoes until tender and mash until smooth consistency.
Add your spices sugar and syrup and mix until all is incorporated.
Fill the casserole dish and level it with the mashed sweet potato.
Sprinkle the pecans that were crushed on top of the sweet potato.
Then the small marshmallows.
Place this dish in the oven and bake for at least 20 minutes until the marshmallows have browned a little.
The sweet potatoes do not have to be cooked again as they are already cooked.
It is only to brown the marshmallows and have all those flavors incorporated into this lunch or dinner meal.
Serve as a side dish with some salad or more vegetables and meat.

Ingredients
- 850 grams of orange sweet potatoes
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons maple syrup
- 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened or melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans
- 1 ½ c mini marshmallows
Instructions
1. Heat oven to 190 Deg. C (375 Deg. F.) Grease the inside of an 8×8-inch baking dish with non stick cooking spray or butter.
2. Peel the sweet potatoes and cook the sweet potato until tender in a pot of water. Place in a large bowl and mash them up.
3. Add brown sugar, syrup butter, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla extract. Mixing well to make sure all has been incorporated.
4. Spread mixture into an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with crushed or broken pecans and top with marshmallows.
5. Bake for 20 minutes or until marshmallows are toasted. Remove pan from oven and serve while warm.
